Lambda sensors are an important part of your car’s emissions’ technology. Their importance stems from your car needing oxygen to work. However, they’re not always useful.

What Is a Lambda Sensor?

A lambda sensor is used for detecting oxygen. Your car needs oxygen for the air-fuel mixture. This mixture is vital for combustion and it needs to be the right amount. Hence, carmakers provide your ride with an oxygen sensor to measure the proportion of oxygen present.

This sensor works by analyzing the exhaust gas so that the catalytic convertors can work optimally. If the air-fuel mixture isn’t at the right amount, however, the cat cannot work properly.

It sounds pretty good then, so why would you want your Lambda sensor off?

Problems and Disadvantages

Removing the catalytic convertor is something that we all hope to do in order to improve the sound and power of our vehicle. However, when decatting a petrol-powered car; you’ll often get an engine management light and a fault code for ‘catalytic converter’ efficiency.

After that, the second lambda sensor is for observing the cat’s efficiency, and the code received on removing the convertor will be stored inside the ECU memory (P0420).

So, can we remove it?

You sure can. By carefully reworking the ECU’s data you can disable the aforementioned second sensor. Therefore, this will allow the decat pipe to be used on your vehicle, free of any pesky engine management lights or fault codes.
